Myths vs. Facts: Air Conditioning

Let’s Break Down The Answers to Common Questions We Receive

Myth or Fact #1: Turning the A/C Way Down Will Cool the House Faster

Myth.

Your air conditioner cools at the same rate no matter how low you set the thermostat. Setting your thermostat lower won’t make it cool any faster – it will just make your system run longer than necessary, which could lead to more unnecessary strain on it.

Myth or Fact #2: You Can Save Energy by Turning Up the A/C When You’re Not Home

Myth.

There’s no evidence to support the thought that turning up the temperature would save you money. If anything, it would result in a very uncomfortable home when you returned and take a few hours to get to that desire temperature. The higher the temperature in the home, the longer it will take to cool it down.

Myth or Fact #3: An Oversized A/C Unit will Cool Better

Myth.

While it may sound great in theory, oversized equipment will not work properly – nor will it cool properly either. If you have an oversized air conditioning unit, it will not dehumidify your home properly and leave your home feeling uncomfortable – and will likely put additional strain on your heat exchanger causing its lifespan to decrease.

Myth or Fact #4: The Name of the Equipment is the Most Important Aspect of an HVAC Replacement

Myth. (Maybe?)

We would argue that a proper load calculations, design and installation will always out-weigh the name on the equipment. However, when you’re making the decision that’s best for your home, we will support and advise you based on our experience.

Myth or Fact #5: Regular Maintenance Helps Your A/C Runn More Efficiently

Fact.

Routine HVAC maintenance is one of the most effective ways to keep your air conditioning system running efficiently and reliably. Air conditioners can lose efficiency over time – leading to higher energy bills, reduced cooling performance and a greater risk of unexpected breakdown – typically during the peak summer months.

Consistent maintenance can help:

  • Improve energy efficiency
  • Extend the lifespan of your HVAC system
  • Maintain consistent indoor comfort
  • Catch small issues before they become costly repairs
